MacroPlan along with Gold Coast City Council, HASSELL, Aurecon and Gaskell Planning Consultants were announced as winners for Best Planning Idea — Large Project for the ‘Gold Coast Rapid Transit 2031’ at the 2013 National Awards for Planning Excellence.
The Gold Coast Rapid Transit project is one of the most significant public transport projects in Australia and will be the first modern light rail project in Queensland.
The project will support the movement of athletes, officials and spectators at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and be a long-term catalyst for new investment and development on the Gold Coast — creating a spectrum of opportunity to manage and direct growth.
The judges for the National Awards for Planning Excellence, said the project was a substantial and significant piece of work noting ‘The Gold Coast faces many challenges as one of Australia’s fastest growing regions, the sixth largest city and a geography that exposes it to the threats of climate change. ‘The Gold Coast Rapid Transit Corridor Study’ not only focuses on public transport connectivity but also adopts the principles of integrated planning practice to operate spatially at a metropolitan scale’.
