The annual PIA Planning Congress was held in Brisbane this year at the Brisbane Convention Centre. The ensuing three days of congress was framed by the usual spectacular sunny Queensland weather. The invite list this year exceeded 600 guests from both the public and private sector across Australia.
The theme of this year’s Congress was to Inspire, Innovate, and Implement. The organisers of this year’s event delivered on this theme by bringing in some of the industry’s most interesting speakers; Stuart Moseley, Erin Barnes, Professor Wulf Daseking and Maha Sinnathamby. The speakers covered a range of topics which addressed planning in not just Australia, but across the world. Similarly, experts from across Australia didn’t fail to deliver interesting and thought provoking content to the audience during the two back-to-back days of congress workshops and presentation sessions.
Of particular interest to me was the session by Brian Roberts, where he presented on the concept of The Third Industrial Revolution (TIR) and its Implications for Planning and Development in Queensland. Brian presented on the concept of the TIR which refers to the notion that the future holds significant changes arising from 3d printing, utilisation of the internet for trade, manufacturing and production and the significant advancements in renewable energy. This session was thought provoking as it sought to address evolving concepts arising from the changing world economy.
In summary, the Planning Congress was by all measures a success and enjoyed by all who attended. The formalities concluded with a bang at the MacroPlan Gala Dinner. I leave you with this photo booth memory from the later part of the evening, showing nothing but smiles!
