The Inland Rail project will connect regional Australia to domestic and international markets.
It will complete the ‘spine’ of the national freight network between Melbourne and Brisbane via regional Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. It’s the largest freight rail infrastructure project in Australia, with early works to start in 2018 and is expected to be operational in 2024-2025.
The Metro Tunnel (sometimes also known as the Melbourne Metro Rail Project or the Metro Rail Capacity Project) is a metropolitan rail infrastructure project currently under construction in Melbourne. It includes the construction of twin 9-kilometre rail tunnels between South Kensington station (north west of the Melbourne City Centre) and South Yarra (in the south east) with five new underground stations.
Construction of the Melbourne Airport Rail Link will begin in the next term of a re-elected Andrews Labor Government. Premier Daniel Andrews announced on 22 July 2018 that a re-elected Labor Government would provide up to $5 billion towards the construction of the long-awaited project, matching the commitment from the Federal Government.
A route options assessment undertaken by Transport for Victoria has shown that of the four routes considered, the Sunshine alignment – previously known as the Albion East alignment – is the Victorian Government’s preferred route for this congestion-busting project.
The Western Interstate Freight Terminal (WIFT) will include the construction of an interstate rail freight terminal and warehousing precinct at Truganina in Melbourne’s west and a rail link to the interstate rail freight network. The WIFT will move freight more efficiently by providing modern terminal facilities closer to the warehouse precincts in Melbourne’s west, reducing the time and length of truck trips. It will also reduce freight traffic through the inner west by removing the need for trains and trucks to bring interstate freight into the Dynon precinct.
The WIFT will be key to the success of the Commonwealth’s Inland Rail project, which is expected to accommodate longer trains with double-stacked containers, which cannot be efficiently accommodated at Dynon. Both projects are expected to be operational by 2025.
